Ankle Sprain:
The most common type of ankle injury is a sprain. A sprain results from the stretching and tearing of small ligaments. There are many ligaments surrounding the ankle that can become damaged when the ankle is forced into an unnatural position. Although ligament damage frequently occurs during athletics or exercise, the most frequent type of sprain occurs when weight is applied to the foot when it is on an uneven surface, causing the foot to "roll in" or "turn". This places the sole of the foot in such a position that it points inward as force is applied, so the ligaments stabilizing the outside part of the ankle become stressed. Following such an incident, one experiences difficulty walking and, in a short time, the outside aspect of the injured ankle begins to cause pain and swells, sometimes so excessively that people believe it is broken.
Upon physical examination, the ankle will exhibit swelling and discoloration over the outside part of the joint. Range of motion (ROM) in the ankle can be limited due to pain and swelling, but strength is not usually affected. X-rays are essential, as the possibility of a fracture must be ruled out.
Ankle sprains can be somewhat serious and require you to follow certain steps to insure the injury heals. It is recomended that within the first 24 perior you should avoid hot showers and baths, heat rubs like Ben Gay, hot packs, drinking alcohol, and taking asprin as it can cause your swelling to increase. Stretching is a easy way to prevent ankle sprains as well as wearing some type of ankle support. These steps should not only be followed after an ankle injury, but should also be adhered to before a problem can start. Most often times people don't start looking for supports or remedies until they get hurt. That is why our products are meant to prevent these injuries from ever happening.
Types of Ankle Sprains:
A high ankle sprain is an injury to the syndesmotic ligaments between the Tibia and Fibula. It is different from a typical sprain because it is more severe, takes much longer to heal, and may require surgery. Football, soccer and basketball are the most common sports associated with a high ankle sprain. Diagnosis: a patient has a history of an outward twisting motion to the ankle and pain just above the ankle joint. The patient initially may not be able to walk on injured leg. Squeezing the leg at the midpoint of the calf or gently moving the foot outward may reproduce the patient's pain. X-rays are taken to rule out fractures that can be associated with this injury. Occasionally, an MRI may be needed to confirm the diagnosis. Nonoperative treatment: Most high ankle sprains can be treated PRICE. P - Protection from further injury via a splint, R - Rest, I - Icing, C - Compression wrapping, and E - Elevation. Syndesmotic sprains will take much longer to heal and will also need more physical therapy to strengthen the muscles around the ankle. Operative treatment: Severe high ankle sprains with significant displacement of the Tibia and Fibula require surgical stabilization. Recommended ankle brace – ASO Flex-Hinge Ankle Stabilizer.
Basketball:
I have been reading some studies done on basketbal players and the rates at which they sustain ankle injuries. The study was done with 10,000 players, 3/4 were average players and the other quarter was semi-professional players. The basketball players, on average, played 2 games a week. They found that ankle injuries were five times more probable in players who had previous ankle injuries. So that means its especially important for a player who has been previously hurt to make sure and protect themselves against further damage to there ankle. Another intersting fact was that you are more susceptible to roll your ankle using the common basketball shoe than if you were to play barefoot. You can test this out yourself by rolling your ankles to the outside while wearing basketball shoes and then do it again with your bare feet. You will find that your ankle will fight you when you are bare foot and will keep the whole sole of your foot down on the ground compared to the basketball shoe which will allow your sole to lift up off the ground. Streching is also very important to keeping those injuries away. The study found that your were 2.6 times more likely to be injuried if proper streching was not follow prior to playing.
